Updated NorGeoSpec Guideline

We are happy to announce that the updated

NorGeoSpec Guideline, Rev. 2, Issue: 01.09.2025

is available now.

The updated NGS guideline has been published on the NorGeoSpec website on 01.09.2025 and replaces the NorGeoSpec 2012, Rev. 01, Issue: 14.12.2016 with immediate effect.

Please feel free to communicate this great news within your organisation and any other interested party you are in touch with! You may refer to the following general information on NorGeoSpec and more specific on the key changes in the updated NorGeoSpec:

NorGeoSpec - A Nordic system for the certification and specification of geosynthetics and geosynthetic-related products

Introduction

NorGeoSpec defines a system for the certification, specification and control testing of geosynthetics and geosynthetic-related products and defines requirements related to the intended purpose (function) of the products. NorGeoSpec is implemented as a complete system as a revision and extension of the NorGeoSpec 2002 and NorGeoSpec 2012.

The Nordic system NorGeoSpec (NGS) has been developed by users from several countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia) to help the users of geosynthetics, especially in Europe, in their specific projects, to fulfil local regulations and guidelines. All users (owners, specifiers, manufacturers) are part of the definition and the development of the NorGeoSpec.

The NorGeoSpec System includes two parts:

  • Part 1 - Product Certification (PC), page 3-36, presents current product requirements for three different functions and frequent uses of geosynthetics for specific projects. A corresponding evaluation of the geosynthetics quality regarding fitness for purpose for these functions is stated by a certificate on Product Certification
  • Part 2 - Product Specification (PS), page 37-50, covers some special areas of application, current cases of use, requirements and levels of performance which may be requested for such specific projects. A corresponding evaluation of the geosynthetic regarding fitness in use for such purposes is stated by a certificate on Product Specification

Key changes of the new NorGeoSpec guideline, Rev. 02, Issue: 01.09.2025 in a nutshell:

  • new specification profiles defined for "filtration in drainage systems"; see NorGeoSpec, Part 2, Product Specifications, section 2.2, page 38 ff.
  • new evaluation of the suitability of a product for an installation under Nordic conditions at negative temperature (down to -10°C). The evaluation is based on the results of the ROUGH project and subsequent Guidelines for the Use of Geosynthetics in Nordic conditions (ROUGH).
  • new certification decision process; see Figure 2, page 23
  • updated normative and other references
  • organisational and structural changes have been made to account for the latest specification and certification requirements

In its function as the NorGeoSpec Certification Body, SINTEF organises seminars typically every two years to inform manufacturers, distributors, laboratories and transport administrations about the current system, any new additions or amendments, and future developments.

These seminars take place in the countries participating in NorGeoSpec on a rotation basis, and provide a forum for the different participants to meet and to exchange information, experiences and views, and for evaluation and discussion.

NorGeoSpec Technical Seminar 2025

We are delighted to invite you to the NorGeoSpec Technical Seminar 2025, taking place in Lund,
Sweden. For our international attendees, we recommend flying into Copenhagen Airport and taking
the Öresundståg train to Lund Central, a journey that takes just 40 minutes. This seminar will serve
as a valuable platform for manufacturers, distributors, infrastructure authorities, designers, and
academic institutions to gather and share insights on the latest advancements and challenges in the
geosynthetics industry.

The Invitation, program and registration form can be found here.

NorGeoSpec-Technical Seminar 2018

We have pleasure in inviting you to the NorGeoSpec-Technical Seminar 2018. The Seminar is being held in Stockholm Sweden. To make the travelling and accommodation more efficient, the seminar will follow the Swedish „Grundläggningsdagen" the day before and takes place at Stockholm airport.

The Invitation can be found here.

NorGeoSpec Technical Seminar 2016

The 2016 Technical Seminar was held in Trondheim Norway. This time the seminar consisted of two sessions. Session one dealt with topics regarding news of the NorGeoSpec system. Session two was organized together with the Norwegian IGS chapter (INTERNATIONAL GEOSYNTHETICS SOCIETY) and dealt with topics regarding "Reinforcement of road pavements in Nordic Countries." About 60 participants from 13 countries joined the meeting

Soil stabilisation seminar: Finish Geotechnical Society

The Finnish Geotechnical Society, Ground Improvement Committee arrange the soil stabilization seminar at Aalto University every year. This year the seminar was on 27th of August, with about 81 participants from public authorities, consultants and contractors.
The program included 12 presentations on topics of which 2 presentations from participants outside Finland. Arnstein Watn, Watnconsult AS made a presentation entitled "Geosynthetics Applications and Geosynthetic Certification" prepared by him and Christian Recker, Senior Project Manager in SINTEF. The presentation gave an overview of functions and applications of geosynthetics with a number of project examples from the Nordic countries. The NorGeoSpec system was presented with the certification requirements and experiences from the introduction in 2002 up to 2015. The NorGeoSpec system is now implemented in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Estonia and is also used in other countries.

The presentation was very well received and it was concluded that the NorGeoSpec system was an important tool to ensure the quality delivered on the market. It was also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Nordic countries to develop common requirements for the use of geosynthetics also in other areas than currently covered by NorGeoSpec.

Presentation can be found here.

NorGeoSpec Technical Seminar 2014

At beginning of 2014 Estonia became member of the NorGeoSpec-System and due to this, the periodic Technical Seminar took place in Tallinn in May.
About 100 participants from 13 countries joined the meeting. Some of them addressed topics about the implementation of NorGeoSpec-System to National Guidelines and a number of companies reported on special case studies. The program was accompanied by a small exhibition of Geosynthetics.

All presentations can be found here:
